As it was the instrument of the Festival's founding father, the violin inevitably occupies a special place in the programme of Gstaad Menuhin Festival & Academy. The 2021 edition is no exception:
On July 18, Julia Fischer, who impressed the master by winning the Menuhin Competition in 1995, comes to the Gstaad Festival Tent along with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, both playing and conducting Mendelssohn and Mozart.
On July 30, Bomsori Kim, who became “Menuhin's Heritage Artists” and star of the Deutsche Grammophon this year, performs a recital in Rougemont with a mixture of classical and virtuoso pieces, before appearing as a soloist in the final concert on 4 September, devoted to the most beautiful English film music.
On 21 August, Alexandra Conunova, who caused a sensation last summer with the release of her recording of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons", will join Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra St. Petersburg to perform the Violin Concerto by Sibelius – an incredibly powerful piece with which the composer made a true gift to the violin literature.
The following day (22 August), Renaud Capuçon and the soloists of the Menuhin Academy (for which Capuçon has been teaching since 2019) will pay tribute to the founding father by performing a work composed especially for Menuhin: Malcolm Arnold’s Concerto for Two Violins.
